Entertainment overstep all lists that encourage people to enhance chickens , but without experience , how can non - chicken keepers have it away how much playfulness the birds really are ? Chickens are full of life and idiosyncrasy . It ’s part of what makes them so much of a hoot to keep in the backyard . Here are five mode my flock keeps me amused .
1. Chickens Sing
Spring has arrived ! The hens and pullets are as musical as their wild - bird full cousin in the trees . At least once each Clarence Day , the crybaby scatter themselves into a choir around the railway yard . One stand still on the terrace ; another roosts on the hose ree ; , a third suffer in the streamlet by the self-feeder ; and a 4th out by the garden . Then they let loose .
Helen , my Australorp , commonly starts the singing . It ’s the usual bok - bok - b - GAWK stuff , but each Gallus gallus has her own pattern and her own voice . Each joins Helen in her own way , and together they compose a song that is altogether embarrassing because my neighbors are so close . Once they get going , they ’re hard to end .
“ Hey ! Hush up ! ” I ’ll say . They ’ll stop singing to stare at me , but once I end the door , they continue until they resolve they ’re finished .

2. Chickens Holler
My pullet are new to ball - laying , so when it pass , they thrust a fit . Snowball , a Speckled Sussex , is especially outspoken when she ’s about to lay an egg . It ’s much like Helen ’s singing , except it ’s a act more desperate .
When I tried to hit a video of her lay an egg , one of my chickens , Snowball , did n’t just holler , but seemed to yellatme , sort of like the chicken in the TV above .
3. Chickens Play
Keep - Away is a quite a little ’s favorite secret plan . When the girls are bring into trouble alfresco , like dig where I do n’t want them to or perch on the privacy fence , I ’ll throw out a intellectual nourishment token outside to keep them occupy . A diminished bagel operate keen — they’ll foot it up and run with it . The biddy that snag the bagel wants to eat up it , but she ca n’t eat it when she ’s run . When she drops it to take a peck , another chicken steals the bagel , and the plot starts again .
4. Chickens Talk
Do you lecture to your chickens ? If you bok and coo to them , they ’ll often tattle back . They love to utter crybaby just as much as you do . And let ’s confront it , since you take up raising chicken , you ’ve fetch pretty good at mimicking bok - ing and coo - ing .
If you blab to your chicken often enough , you ’ll learn their voice , style and even their moods . Before long , you ’ll know which crybaby is outdoors make noise without even looking .
5. Chickens Hide
Every so often , you ’ll lose a chicken . Your headcount will come up short , and you ’ll fear the worst . You might even motor around the neighborhood ( twice ) looking for a runaway chicken , but she ’s in all likelihood obliterate on your property somewhere .
When Mabel disappeared , I could n’t come up her anywhere . She was the head of the flock at the time , and the other girl were perceptibly overwrought by her absence seizure . When I at long last bump her , she was inside the underside of the grille , crouching in the ashes .
What kinds of funny thing do your chicken do ?
