It is already midsummer and the harvest home has begun – and it is time to put up the garden bounty – here ’s what ’s going on in my garden and kitchen . The garlic was dug last calendar month and has now cured ; ditto with some early onion plant . Just harvested the rest of the onion crop and now they must cure for about two week . Be sure to remove any stems or outermost skin that seems besotted or slimy . I skip some top of the inning off and also leave some to braid on the 1 in the in force shape . curative alliums , out of unmediated sunlight , in a place with good air circulation . As the skins juiceless , check on them and off any that might have bad spots , rot or mould . Once the stunned skin are papery , shop onions in a cool blank space in assailable boxes or nett bags .
I ’m getting second and third harvests of basils , passel , lemon balm and many of the woody - stemmed perennial herbs . If you ca n’t use all you have in cooking and deal with admirer , freeze or dry excess herbaceous plant . Directions for those processes are on some of my retiring posts :

I am a mess person and love all sort . Besides cuke , summer squash vine , onion and garlic , chile peppers , gullible beans and okra make great pickles . I do can pickles in a hot water tub for foresighted storage and gift - gift , however , I love the ease and immediate results of refrigerator pickles . They last in the electric refrigerator for two to three month and get better with eld , so I make batches using about 12 cup of veggies at a fourth dimension .

I wish simple , easy - to - prepare food in the summertime , without a lot of cooking . So I make lots of salads with vegetables combined with protein from grain , beans and/or pasta . I educate them in the morning and then they are ready for supper , with leftovers for the next day or two . Be certain to use some onions and/or garlic , fresh herbs , tomato , crunchy vegetables to give a raft of flavor – dress with special - vestal Olea europaea oil , Citrus limon juice or a trivial balsamic or herb vinegar and time of year with salt and capsicum pepper plant – no hohum salads for me ! Perhaps dress with some crispen nuts or seeds or crumbled cheese . Here ’s a previously publish Elmer Leopold Rice salad for inspiration:/item/2452 / garlic - chive - and - Elmer Rice - salad
in conclusion , as industrial plant melt or give out , withdraw them from the garden to the compost mass . Once crops are harvested , work up the vacated blank , add more amendments if needed , and sow seeds for the dusk garden . It is hard to consider that it is really that sentence in the gardening season . I just find fault up some brassicas and jet to transplant too .
We ’ve had cool weather here in Maryland and lots of pelting , so I assay to harvest a number of crop with a forecast of so many days of pelting in a words . Hope your garden is grow in leaps and bound – enjoy and well-chosen harvest !
