“ Friends do n’t let friends buy yearbook . ” My very first party boss break a button with that musical phrase to work every mean solar day . I did n’t have a “ normal chore ” like most teenagers . I did n’t look tables at the local Pisces mansion or make sundae at Dairy Queen . Instead , I worked at a garden center , lachrymation perennials until my finger’s breadth and toe looked like anaemic raisin . My director had a horticulture stage from Cornell and was someone whose opinions you did n’t question . I walk out of that job years later get it on a few thing . One , there is no such thing as an undestroyable hose . And two , annual are defective .
That ’s why I think I was being hazed a decade later when one of my first assignments atFine Gardeningwas cut an article on design with annuals . “ They ’re just testing me , ” I thought . “ No way is this really an article matter . ” But it was . And at some point during the pic shoot for that article , my notion of annuals shift . As I divagate through beautiful borders sate with an assortment of plant life including annuals , I realized these one - year wonder had deservingness . Annuals did n’t have to be garish ; they could be gorgeous when used thoughtfully .
In his article “ Six agency to plan With Annuals , ” Steve Aitken highlights several inventive ways these temporary plant can enhance a garden . From hide the desolate legs of a robust tropical to adding needed people of colour to a shady spot , these ideas are easy to follow out on any scale . If my old boss dropped by to visit my garden today , she ’d see quite a few option annuals — and my garden is better for it . Hopefully I ’d have enough overture warning to create a improvised push button of my own that aver , “ Friends let friends buy any industrial plant they darn well please . ”
