If you ’re balcony horticulture , you may be feeling sorry for yourself .
Do n’t !
As Mike Cernovich , author of the bestselling bookGorilla Mindsetwrites , look at your problem as challenges .

Your small balcony garden is a challenge – NOT a problem !
In my film13 Tips , Tricks and Lessons for Homesteading an Acre , I share the story of how I used to long for a large space , wishing for 10 , 15 or even 20 demesne I could farm .
After do work my acre for over five year , I no longer feel the need for a big blank . I ’ve even catch myself take care with longing at small urban backyards .

Plant a ginger root – get more!
Why ?
Because of the power of focussed attempt . Balcony gardening allows you to create a piddling Shangri-la haven without killing yourself .
Why Balcony Gardening Rocks
When you spread all your workplace across a large space , it ’s easy to get overwhelmed . It ’s hard to make everything look the way you desire . It ’s intemperate to keep 100 tree diagram healthy and well-chosen unless you ’re a full - time gardener or farmer . It ’s hard to pick the bug off 600 cabbages . It ’s gruelling to harvest 10 bed of potatoes .
But if you have a small outer space garden , you could make it incredible with much less time and effort .
I learned this example when I owned a little cottage in Tennessee . The cost of ready up that little 2/1 home was cheap . We had to replace the roof : it cost $ 3,500 . Sure , that ’s a chunk of change – but it ’s NOTHING like the monetary value of fixing the roof on a self-aggrandising , complicated multi - story house .

You could grow PIE in your balcony garden!
You could repaint a way with a gal of paint in an afternoon . You could sandpaper and seal all the level in a weekend .
It ’s the same way with balcony gardening . If you only have a little orbit , you may really make it count incredible for only a little bite of money .
Sure , you ’re not going to be able to grow everything you wish . A pecan tree is out of the inquiry ( unless you make it into a bonsai ! ) and food grain corn would be a bite ruffianly ; yet you could wad in a lot of industrial plant by growing vertically and hold fast to species that are miserly with their space considerations .

engraft what you lie with . Make your balcony an escape from the rabidity . Put a small table out there amongst your plants and originate writing your novel .
Here are just a few edible plants I would grow on a balcony .
Plants for Balcony Gardening
Ginger
Plant a peppiness ancestor – get more !
gingerroot call for subtlety , so if your balcony does n’t get a raft of direct light , plant ginger ! Roots from the computer storage will commonly grow . Bury them in a pot about 4 - 6″ deep and await . They ’ll come up . A year or two after , when they go inactive in the crepuscle , you may tumble the slew out and harvest the mass of roots – or just break off a little here and there as you need it .
Basil
Basil is a no - brainer . lead off from seeds in a pot of well - drain dirt in at least half sun . If you could findAfrican blue sweet basil , great . It ’s a perennial version you wo n’t have to replant . Just know this : you need to buy your first African basil as a plant life , or beg a cut from a friend . It does n’t mature from seed .
Bush beans
Bush beans are so light to grow that it ’s almost mortifying . A half - barrel planter should be capable to host about 12 plants , which will each give you a span handfuls of pods . noggin like lots of Dominicus , so if you have a shady balcony you likely wo n’t have much lot .
Strawberries
hemangioma simplex are the consummate container plant . They even havetheir own special planters . A few years ago I buy my sis - in - jurisprudence a hang basket of strawberries and she ’s been keeping them alive for years and harvest home berry off and on . Strawberries will take about half sunshine but acquire upright with more .
Blueberries
You could grow PIE in your balcony garden !
Blueberries work unusually well in good - sized pots . Plant them in rotted pine barque ( not normal potting grease ) and they ’ll be quite happy . blueberry bush also eff java ground , so just empty ’em all in the top of your blueberry pots .
Dwarf Mulberry
Dwarf mulberry tree varieties are shrubbier than their Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree relatives and can well be kept spring up at only a few feet tall . Some will produce through the yr . Just know this : gnome mulberry have vigorous roots and will fill a pot right up , then get thirsty all the time . I ’d put the posterior of their pots in tray of water so they always have some to sip .
Oregano
Oregano is really easy to grow in pots and will take nicety or sun . Do n’t overwater it . The vining habit of oregano makes it nice for hanging baskets , though my permaculture side would encourage you to just arise it as a ground cover around the base of one of your larger balcony horticulture additions , like the following little tree .
Japanese Persimmon
I love Nipponese persimmon trees . Though they may not be the most fertile plus to your balcony gardening plans , they do make improbable fruit and are comfortable to grow in a tumid pot . Unlike many fruit trees they can be keep open small as well .
Kumquat
The kumquat tree is another excellent small tree , and likely more productive than the Japanese persimmon tree . They do well in potentiometer and will handle one-half to full sun . I ’ve also watch some citrus tree growing in full shade and fruiting ; however , I would n’t count on that .
Key Lime
The primal lime is a nice small tree . I also wrote about its girl the central limequat a few day ago . Both are nice small trees . Add some Key calcium hydrate pie to your balcony gardening ! The downside for both of these citrus trees is their brutal thorns . Be sure they ’re off to the side where they wo n’t displume your visitor ’ clothing .
Lemon
Lemons are also easy , easy , easy to grow in pots . They ’re not very big trees to begin with and the constraint of spring up in a heap will help keep them from cause out of control . Half to full sun .
Calamondin
I covered this tree in two late videos – first , one on the fruit in general , then a 2nd one onhow my married woman and I made whisky soursfrom this incredibly flavourous little citrus . Calamondins are very beautiful trees with nicely - scented flush . They ’re deserving growing just for the room they expect . Bonus : some tree diagram will fruit twice a year .
Turmeric
Turmeric is a form of peppiness and is a high - value harvest that gives dress its yellow colouration and earthy spice . Grow it the same as ginger . Curry on your balcony – how cool is that ?
Hot Peppers
Hot capsicum pepper plant do really well in pots – I ’ve construe some immense ones growing like shrub . They ’ll endure for years under the right-hand condition . Add some spiciness to your life . ensure your balcony has plenty of sunshine before planting peppers – they like it shiny and spicy .
Cranberry Hibiscus
Beautiful leaves with tart sapidity
Cranberry hibiscus is a dark red - riffle repeated hibiscus with tart leave that are excellent in Caesar salads , plus it makes a nice hedging . They also have tremendous flowers and can be snip as needed .
Coffee
Coffee is a great potted plant for spectre or sun . If it ’s freezing cold outside , let it live in your living room until warmer conditions return . The yields are n’t high but the gewgaw is bully .
Rosemary
Rosemary like lots of cheerfulness and not too much water . Give it a well - drain mix and a place in the sun and it will inhabit for geezerhood and spice up up your animation .
Tomatoes
Tomatoes may in reality be prosperous to produce in a pot on a balcony than they are to maturate in the garden . The pest trouble are fewer , plus they get perfect land from the beginning . ensure they have lots of sunshine and some child’s play for pollination . If there ’s no breeze , shake up the plants now and again when they ’re in bloom to jostle the pollen into the correct place .
Lettuce
Lettuce is really easy to grow in pots . It ’ll take sun or shade . bribe a packet of folio gelt seeds , fill a good - sized wad with grime , rip reach the seed packet and sprinkle the seeds around , then lightly knead them into the territory . piss , and in a week or two piddling lettuces will set out emerging . In a month , you could start picking leave … and you ’ll have barren salad for months .
More Inspiration for Small-Space Gardeners
A week ago I recorded a Modern YouTube TV answering a mates of questions from masses without much gardening space . In it , I also hazard to be John Cougar Mellencamp .
And here ’s Bill Mollison , co - founder of the permaculture cause , show you how to do balcony horticulture :
Once of these daylight I may write a Bible on balcony gardening and gardening in humble spaces .

Turmeric
I ’ve also see advisedly create a small , fence in patio at my new home as a trial small infinite garden . Say a 6′ x 10′ distance I could habituate as a proving ground for some of my ideas . That way I could be more avail to the many of you who are living in apartments , rental houses or urban locations . I could then plant as much as potential in that distance and book yields just as I do on the rest of my homestead . I ’ll count you I could pluck off at least 200lbs of food in that size of it space over a yr – probably more .
retrieve trellises . inscrutable pots . miserly crop . in high spirits - one dollar bill vegetables and root .
I ’ll think on this idea more . For now , balcony gardeners : do n’t be disquieted with what you have . Embrace the challenge and let me hump what you grow in 2016 – I ’d love to see it .
