Ryan writes about his balcony garden and how it benefitted from the compost methods inCompost Everything :
Read 94.2 % of your record and love your web log and media . I grow in apartments ( containers ) in 7b NC . I ’ve adapted what I see over 3 years and figure I ’d deal my version of the container melon vine pit !
I struggle with heat in NC from direct sun on container and evaporation , but humidness is a problem here as well so I use grow bags . I line them with composition board for body of water keeping and a heat shield ( photo one ) and fill the bottom few inch with flora debris for drain / I have to get rid of it somehow .

I then fill the bottom 1/3 - 1/2 with form of finished compost and soil layers ( photo 2 ) .
I live in a balcony and like to compost as much as possible so I keep a 5 gallon bucketful lukewarm composter churning . This theme is from your melon vine nether region concept ! I call for to use this not hot compost ease up my space constraints .
Then I top with soil and 2 - 3 inches of mulch to help with water retentivity ( photo 3/4 ) !

And mushroom farm sometimes which is cool . Much of this break down over the time of year it ’s play to observe the territory change . I will remulch as needed .
This method helped me grow teras tomato plant plants last year ( > 7 ’ marvelous ) and support herbs or flowers in the pots as well . The composition board will be 90 % give-up the ghost by the end of summer , it gets deluge with roots .
Hopefully you enjoyed seeing these pic ! You ’re a big inspiration . Last one is a balcony shot from last twelvemonth in the early summer of my quondam 3rd floor place in 2021 . Watermelons and cucumbers finally take over the handrail :) .

give thanks you , Ryan – that is a beautiful garden .
I enjoy the escaping tomatoes on the left field .
This is definitely a “ get where you ’re establish ” situation . For a while I had a porch garden but it was n’t nearly as beautiful as this one . Renting can be tough on gardens , but Ryan has made the best of it .

We ’ve used a similar container method for gage – especially braggart pots – for a long time . material material in the bottom , then put some soil over it . Plants love it !
I ’ve writtenmore on balcony horticulture here .
