I ’ll never forget my surprise the daylight I discovered what attend like a gray tree frog resting in the dead place just beneath the hinged lid of my compost bin .
That good afternoon was a scorcher , but the frog take care coolheaded and collected in its shady post . A unfaltering supply of gnats and tent flap buzzed around the greens and other refuse I ’d recently added to my compost great deal . ( The insect were plenteous , because I had n’t yet taken the time to give the wise stuff a proper pitchforking . )

luckily , just as we put up birdhouses and even solitary pollinator habitats , so , too , can we create a niggling more blank for area amphibious vehicle .
require to give these animate being a helping hand where you live ? Amphibians opt shelter that ’s umbrageous and moist , and you could well allow them with both .

Dig It
To start out , you ’ll need an out - of - the - way post , some scrap woodwind instrument — I used a stone slab — a duet of large rock and a shovelful .
Choose a section of untreated scrap plywood that ’s at least half an in thick and one to two satisfying understructure wide . I did n’t have any untreated Sir Henry Wood on deal , but I did have a 16 - by-16 - inch pave stone , which exercise utterly well .
move out any brush or weeds from the area where you require to ground your amphibious habitat .
Next , dig a shallow , uniform pit . It should appraise the same length and width as your board . As for the astuteness , you need only dig down about two inch deep . I used a brick to smooth and compact both the floor and wall of my fossa .
Place your board over the top of the stone pit . The back edge of your board should rest directly on the dirt . The front edge of the board will roost on your two big rock and roll .
site one rock along the front left side of the pitfall . The other move along the front correct side . ( See picture below . )
This lofty domain in front is the entrance to your new habitat . Toads and other amphibious vehicle will seek refuge from the Lord’s Day ’s rays in the deep shade make underneath . Susan Brackney
Finishing Touches
I packed a layer of mulch along the back and side edge of the cap of my home ground . I also planted some excess fateful - eyed Susans , blob jewelweed and common milkweed plants nearby . All aboriginal to my area , they ’ll eventually fill in the distance around the amphibious habitat . As they do , they ’ll help to pull dirt ball , which , in turn , will bestow around raw frogs and toads .
I go past the remaining patches of exposed soil with a fatheaded layer of mulch to smother any weedy competitors and engage in wet . Because amphibious aircraft also involve access to water , I placed a clay saucer nearby .
Rather than use my chlorinated municipal water , I lead it off with water from my rain barrel .
need to add a few more batrachian rest stops around ? sprain some cadaver pots upside - down and partially bury them at an angle , so that they make a little extra spook . ( If your pots let in drain mess , be sure to plug these up in Holy Order to keep the Lord’s Day ’s rays out . )
Keep some extra saucers of refreshful H2O near each of your semi - buried pots — and then ? Keep an eye out for unnumerable new frog and toad supporter .
