I need to severalize you all a small Election Day story . This happened in Minnesota , oh , about 25 year ago .

John and I had prompt since the last metre we voted , so I called to find out when the local polling situation would open . ( It was at an honest-to-god grange Asaph Hall way out in the stick . ) So I hotfoot the right way over there first thing in the aurora — and no one was there .

I waited and steamed and after a half hour or so , I drive into Beroun to our former polling station . No , they said , I could n’t vote there . I had to go back to Munch Township . So I drive back out there and they were just enter the door ( about an hour after the posted opening sentence . ) So I stormed in and vote and was feel fairly testy when I came out .

As I channelize for my truck , an old , old serviceman was alighting from his gondola . He was maybe 5 - foot 2 - inch , very wizened , slight and bent over , and he was wearing an honest-to-god - fashioned ignominious “ Sunday respectable ” lawsuit and the big grin you could ever imagine .

I smile and said hello ( because that ’s how you do thing in rural Minnesota ) , and he enjoin , “ Ah ! A wonderful day , a splendiferous day , is day we vote ! In old country we ca n’t vote . Here , every American picks leaders ! ” And grinning from capitulum to get a line he hobbled on to the polling property .

I still get chill think about that . We take so much for granted , including our freedom to vote .

So even if politics bore you , recall that story on Nov. 6 ( that ’s American human ’ Election Day ) . Pick your best-loved candidates and vote — because you could .
