Finding eye-catching fall plantings at an unexpected location
Hi GPODers !
Last week I shared photograph from a late misstep toYankee Candle Villagein South Deerfield , Massachusetts to talk about some flora for Halloween ( If you missed it , check that post out here ) . However , I did n’t mention that I had not anticipated their all-encompassing garden displays at all , and that I took several more photos ofcolorful gloaming plantsthat catch my eye . I resolve to portion out some more today .

There were scores of amazing yearbook still covered in blooms , include this Coral Nymph salvia ( Salviacoccinea‘Coral Nymph’,Zones 9–11 or as an annual ) that is much - hump by hummingbirds and other pollinators .
There are a multitude of decorative grasses that shine this time of year . And while there are many native selection that can allow for late - season interest ( if you ’re looking for some great native grasses , be certain to check out this article : Native Grasses ) , it ’s often non - native option that determine themselves in most fall displays . Zebra grass ( Miscanthus sinensis‘Zebrinus’,Zones 5–9 ) at least bring some out - of - the - boxwood interest with its golden stripe , but it should be invalidate at all costs in milder climate where it can easily spread of out control .
Yet another one-year providing late - season blooms for busy pollinators was this mythologic purple spider flower ( Cleome houtteana , Zones 10–11 or as an annual ) . A flower with a really interesting form , I ’m particularly fond of its other common name : ‘ Grandfather ’s whisker ’ .

Another flamboyant decorative , ruby grass ( Melinis nerviglumis‘Savannah’,Zones 8–10 ) does double - duty with blue - light-green foliage and dusty - rose colored panicles that fade to whiten as the season shape up . Of naturally , it ’s another grass that can reseed aggressively in some areas .
Again , a masses of mums in fun nightfall colors , and tons of different mixed bag of ornamental kale were scattered throughout the bed . This Peacock ™ ‘ Red ’ ornamental dough ( Brassica oleracea‘Peacock Red’,annual ) was particulalry centre - take in with its lacy green - to - purple foliage .
‘ Silver Falls ’ dichondra ( Dichondra argentea‘Silver Falls’,annual ) is a a pop selection for “ spillers ” in container plantings , but I come up this blueprint particularly compelling . Rather than trailing to the ground in a hang basketball hoop , or shed off to one side as a silvery accent mark , this ‘ Silver Falls ’ was used to altogether twine and hold back the container ’s manifest skunk .

A close up to better show how this fab planting looks like it ’s growing straight out of the footing .
I hope you savour this selection of fun fall plants , and that some pleasantly surprised you — just as they were to me .
