GPOD on the Road: South Florida With Colleen

Escape to somewhere warm

Today we ’re on the route with Colleen . We ’ve chew the fat herhome garden before , but today she ’s taking us along on a tropical holiday .

I escaped my usual New York winter for a trip to South Florida and some glorious atmospheric condition this month . I ca n’t help but think that I ’ll go home and view my potted tropicals as slightly pathetic .

I believe this is a look up at the dramatic leaves of the traveler ’s palm(Ravenala madagascariensis),which is not a true palm at all but has a pretty similar look . It is predict traveler ’s palm because , obviously , the leaf floor capture rainwater , and so it can be used as an emergency H2O supply for thirsty traveler .

The blooms of a parrot heliconia(Heliconia psittacorum),one of the many tropic ginger relatives grown for their showy blossom and bracts , are splendid .

Spathoglottis plicatais an orchid with gaudy heyday and dramatic pleated leaves . Unlike many tropic orchidaceous plant , which naturally dwell perched on the branches of trees , this variety grows on the primer coat .

Another tropical peppiness is the red ginger(Alpinia purpurata).The actual flowers are pocket-sized , white , and only last a short while , but these showy red bracts that grow around the bloom are bright and make a long - lasting display in the garden .

That ’s ti plant(Cordylinefruticosa)in the back and colourful croton(Codiaeum variegatum)in the front . Grown all over the tropics , the ti plant is peculiarly known from Hawaii , where it was bring by Polynesian explorers and has a wide range of role , include the making of leis .
