Tropical plants make a lush garden

Hello , my name is Helena Mahoney . I am 87 eld old and live in Vero Beach , Florida . I have been readingFine Gardeningever since I became a certified Master Gardener , almost 30 years ago . I subsist in Zone 10 on a suburban lot that is less than half an acre . Most of my bed are inpartial shadebecause of theextreme heathere . I have many unusualtropical plantsin my garden , including bromeliads and philodendrons .

Gardening in Florida is pretty different from what most of us are used to ! seem at all the luxuriant , tropical foliation .

A easy place to sit in spite of appearance and look out at the hobo camp beauty of the garden alfresco .

northerly gardener are used to remember of bromeliads ashouseplants , but where temperatures do n’t get below freezing in the wintertime , they can be peachy perennial outside for shaded spots . northerly gardeners can mimic this feeling by using them asannualsand bringing them deep down for the wintertime .

This beautiful philodendron looks to me like the currently wildly democratic ‘ pinkish Princess ’ . Houseplant Instagram accounts have made this a must - have plant life , but in Helena ’s garden it does n’t have to live in the business firm .

Light shade is a great feature in the spicy Florida sun , and many plant expand in those conditions .
