Beauties for a wet spot
A recent visit to the Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden in Richmond , Virginia , coincided with tip bloom of its wonderful aggregation of Japanese sword lily ( Iris ensata , Zones 3–9 ) . Unlike their more popular cousin-german , the bearded irises , which are considerably suited to well - run out ground , Japanese irises grow happily in anything from dampish garden soil to shallow standing piss . Happiest in acidulent grease with good deal of fertiliser and full sun , Nipponese irises are well worth any effort to make happy as they have some of the declamatory , most amazingly beautiful flowers you’re able to maturate . They ’re an obvious choice for gardens in the southeastern United States , as the clime in that part of the country is very similar to the irises ’ aboriginal Japan .
Growing in a huge mickle like this , Iris ensata‘Pinstripe ’ makes an incredible statement in the garden . It is easy to see where this mixed bag go its name , as each petal is handle with a goodly connection of hunky-dory , regal parentage .
Iris ensata‘Shei Shonogon ’ is a simple Nipponese iris diaphragm , looking much like the coinage did in the wild before Nipponese gardeners started breeding and selecting new and improved forms . It and varieties like it are unspoiled option for a wilder , more naturalistic garden figure . View our Japanese Iris industrial plant usher here .

Iris ensata‘Nikko ’ receive closer inspection of the intricate pattern in each flower . What a work of art!View more melodic theme for using purple in your garden .

The huge, pure white flowers ofIris ensata‘Snowy Hills’ float like clouds over the leaves. Incredibly beautiful in the garden, Japanese irises also make wonderful cut flowers. Can’t you just imagine a big vase full of these white wonders?
