What do you do when the bush you based your entire English - cottage - dash garden upon dies ? The rose , that fair - blossomed beauty , fall quarry to an ugly disease which we ’ve discussed here before , Rose Rosette Virus . You might   commence to invest hard in novel native shrub , choose hardiness and multifariousness for your garden . If you want native bush , they are n’t that well-situated to find locally in Oklahoma . I ca n’t imagine why , but they just are n’t . Well , peradventure I can cerebrate of a few   ground why .

put back roses is complicated because most rose produce in the 3′ x 5′   chain . Although my garden is expectant , it is comprised of small “ rooms ” laid out in a geometric design . A 3′ x 5′   shrub is the perfect size for these suite . Some of the natives I ’m replacing the roses with grow much , much prominent . There is definitely some switch lead on at my household and in my garden . Also , I ’m putting vernal plants in holes where amply - arise rose once resided . I opine it all looks like a mishmash , but what’a girl to do ? Losing the backbone of your landscape painting sure gives you   opportunity for personal and physical growth . In some place , I ’m repeating be   shrub like the non - nativePinus mugoin one of the baseball field determine bed . I still have n’t decided if I ’ll plant another one on the stone ’s other side   or not . Mugo pines are full for yr - round color .

As for the native shrub , I had to buy most   online , and they came in very modest can . It will be a while before they grow and look good , but I ’m willing to take the metre for a more   natural landscape . Gardeners maturate and change over time just like their gardens do , and I ’ve become more interested in the bird , lizard , snakes – yes , even snake – and pollinator than the flora themselves . That does n’t signify the garden wo n’t still have its English bungalow flavor . I ’ve just develop a act , and as I publish previously , I ’m growing older . Taking care of 100 positive roses fill a bell each spring . Even though I ’m deplorable about the roses , I ’m also relieve . It ’s forced me to do something I want to do anyway – add together sess and bush .

Blooms are fairly sparse in my fall garden.

After readingThe Living Landscape : Designing for Beauty and Biodiversity in the Home Garden , by Rick Darke and Doug Tallamy , I want   a garden robust in texture and build layer upon bed . Another good book on this topic isThe Layered Garden : Design Lessons for Year - Round Beauty from Brandywine Cottage , by David Culp , the valet de chambre behind some of my favoritehellebores . I do n’t live in a climate similar to any of these authors . I am savour - dab in the middle of   the swell American Prairie and the first of the deciduous forest . Each generator   boost us to plant a very various landscape from tree diagram canopy to the little forest plant or the grasses in a meadow glade . If there is one thing I ’ve learned from my experience with Rose Rosette Virus , it ’s to never plant too many of any one works again . Oh , and within that , I have a caution . daylily do n’t count . They are pretty easy to replace when necessary . Everyone has their soft spots . I ’m tell my garden will be on the regional daylily tour in 2017 so I ’ve been buying newer cultivar and send some of my old ones up to my church service for their gardens . They ’re still beautiful even if they are n’t the newest style .

My dear friend , Gail fromClay and Limestonehas been the good help suggest native bush to replace my sad roses . I ’m so thankful for her cognition . These are the aboriginal shrub I ’ve bought so far .

I do n’t have photos of most of these plant life because they are so raw here .

Rosa ‘Carefree Beauty’

Rosa ‘Carefree Beauty,’ another one I still have.

I also boughtCelastrus scandens , American bittersweet vine , and put it behind the two‘Annabelle ’ hydrangeas , also aboriginal to the U.S. , on the side   arbor . Plus , I gotLoniceraxbrownii‘Dropmore Scarlet ’ honeysuckle for the other side of the independent spindle . This is to replace one of the ‘ Cl . Old Blush ’ roses that died . On the other side of the same arbor will grow crossvine .

Tomorrow , I ’m headed to Tulsa to speak about Enchanting   April at theTulsa Botanic Garden . I hope to see you there .
