Favorite images from the gardening year
My name is Robin Leja , and I know and garden in Pickerington , Ohio . I call my place Robin ’s Nest , and I maintain a blog calledLife in Robin ’s Nest , which I update at the terminal of each month .
This photo basically illustrates the start of my gardening year . This isIrisreticulata‘Harmony ’ ( zone 5–8 ) , which is usually the very first light bulb to pop up in late wintertime , sometimes even recent February , but usually former March . I particularly like to plant it under my ‘ Angelina ’ sedum(Sedumrupestre‘Angelina ’ , Zones 3–9 ) , because ‘ Angelina ’ unremarkably turn shades of yellow , orangish , and red at this metre of twelvemonth and spend a penny a pretty contrast with ‘ Harmony ’ .
In my front yard , I have a ‘ Forest Pansy ’ redbud tree(Cerciscanadensis‘Forest Pansy ’ , Zones 5–9 ) that is much get laid by us . It blooms at the same prison term as mytulipsand makes such a pretty backdrop for them . The white flowers are candytuft(Iberissempervirens , Zones 4–9 ) , and it please me how they bloom at exactly the same time as the tulips , making the perfect surreptitious . creep phlox(Phlox subulata , Zones 3–9 ) also flower with them .

I ’m a with child fan of tulips , which I broadly plant each autumn . I treat them likeannuals , since they do n’t come back as faithfully as many people call back . Most years , my best friend and I visit Holland , Michigan , during theTulip Time Festival , where we wander the tulip fields to pick out thebulbswe’ll consumption that nightfall . This particular year I pick out a colour scheme of apricot and coral colors .
May is one of the pretty months in the nest as warm weather arrives and everything bursts into blossom . These are my ‘ Princess Victoria Louise ’ poppies(Papaverorientale‘Princess Victoria Louise ’ , zone 3–7 ) . This started out as threetiny plantsabout five twelvemonth ago and has since spread out into this display . I like how they look with my feeding bottle tree .
At the end of May , my nigella(Nigelladamascena)comes into peak . It ’s a ego - seed annual that is fertile in my garden . I give source to everyone and still have plenty to spare . Itsblue bloomsare a sight to lay eyes on .

June is a peculiarly joyous clock time here in the nest , with a riot of flower at every turn . This exposure is a closeup of the ‘ At Last ’ rose , which is unworried and resistant to disease , and it blooms copiously all summer long . I extremely recommend it !
On my front lamp berth , I farm two differentclematis , but they ’ve become so interlace over time that it ’s impossible to tell which is which . On the front you see here , it should be ‘ Jackmanii Superba’(Clematis‘Jackmanii Superba ’ , Zones 4–9 ) , and the back should be ‘ Polish Spirit’(Clematis‘Polish Spirit ’ , Zones 3–11 ) in honour of my husband ’s Polish heritage .
This is a front view of my bay tree window sphere . That whitehydrangeais call ‘ Fire Light’(Hydrangea paniculata‘Fire Light ’ , Zones 3–8 ) , and I recommend it to everyone . It starts out white , then turn pink , and eventually burgundy in the spill . It is ALWAYS full of flowers through the time of year , and they ’re especially nice to preserve by drying .

I grow milkweed , and I raise crowned head caterpillars in my kitchen . I examine the milkweed leaves , garner the egg , and wait for them to hatch , at which point I continue to allow for them with clean milkweed until they form their chrysalis . Once the butterflies come forth , I issue them out in my garden . Often they flummox around for picture before taking off . I peculiarly like when they pose on mysunflowers . I call this shot “ Incoming ! , ” as I did n’t comment this bee coming in live until after I see the stroke .
What I liked about this special shooter was that it seemed to be a work in orange . I was sit on the patio , and it just catch my centre — my discarded orangish garden gloves , my ever grow collection of Talavery pottery , and my tricolor geranium(Pelargoniumhybrid , Zones 9–12 or as an one-year ) in blossom , with the potted basil andsucculentsnearby , and even a duad of Oklahoma Salmon River zinnias(Zinniaelegans , annual ) in the corner .
Here ’s my ‘ Fire Light ’ hydrangea in September . A few years ago , I had the opportunity to trial some plants for Proven Winners , and this was one of those . I give it a very enthusiastic two - thumbs - up . It begins blooming in white , then transitions to ping , and at long last burgundy . It ’s a very dependable bloomer !
